A bright and sunny Saturday morning has given way to a cold grim afternoon. Temperatures are low and birds would be advised to stay put in their down lines nests. The forecast is for snow – our first real wintry weather of the season. In keeping with the forecast the 6 Nations rugby has just started. I was lucky enough to nab the last bag of coal from the garage on Burton Road though though whether I light the fire or not tonight will depend on what is on the TV. The TV room is the warmest room but has no open fireplace. I am shortly popping out to the Peacock to watch Scotland v England. Unfortunately as snow is forecast I am refraining from the drink because I will need to pick Joe up from school at 21.30 hrs in the Jeep. We can’t risk assuming Anne’s car will be ok and she won’t drive mine – something to do with it being far too big.

You wish you could take photos of people you see on the tube without their being aware. There are thousands of caricatures to be made.

Some time later it is dark, the visitors have departed for their own snug hearth next door and I have opened a bottle of Taittinger for general consumption (mostly by me as Anne is not partial to the stuff).

Yea well of course up in the hills you have to be able to dash out at the drop of a hat to rescue the cow or sheep from the hedge, or just to pick up that hat.

A response from the other side:

Flowers explode as we bounce in to our kiwi spring. Wildly oscillating almost daily between scorching calm and antarctic winds. We brace ourselves against the latter knowing its spells will become gradually briefer. We know if we are patient the sun will win the battle and summer will be upon us. For now we slap on the sun screen, even in the wind and rain, to prevent our winter skin turning red as the harsh kiwi sun beats down behind the clouds. It's a vibrant time. Our expectations are full
