HMS Victory

Filed under: diary — Trefor Davies @ 1:48 pm

V pleasant evening at Ian and Michelle’s on Tuesday followed by a full on Wednesday. We visited the Historic Royal Dockyard for the first time. Truly impressive. HMS Victory was stunning and the Mary Rose v interesting. Even bumped into @Sue Black having a day out with one of her many grandchildren. Afterwards to Gunwharf Quay for a Nandos then hung around to see the eclipse before getting into the queue for the 23:00 Brittany Ferries boat to Caen. Time passed quickly enough and were one of the first on, having paid for the privilege. Our cabin was also ready and we were straight in despite many announcements asking people to wait in the public lounges as their cabins weren’t ready. They did ours first obvs. Queued for ages for a pint of Lagunitas. Longer than it took me to drink it. Everyone waiting for their cabins were in the queue. Bed by the time the ship set sail at eleven.

The wake up call this morning was a brutal 04:45. We had breakfast delivered to the cabin and were one of the first off the boat and through passport control by seven. This is when we found that if THG brings our marriage cert next time she could stay indefinitely despite being a Brit. Irish passports ftw. Lucky girl. We are unlikely to want to go to Europe for over 3 months in a year which is the current allowance.

We made good progress on a fairly empty French motorway system. 267 or so miles from Ouistreham to Les Sables. Couple of pit stops to fuel up on caffeine. Was quite tired after the overnight voyage. Arrived in Les Sables D’Olonne by twelve thirty ish. The room was not ready, natch but we sat in the “Club” for some time whilst I did some admin and THG caught up on the Archers or similar.

After a while we set out onto the hot streets of Les Sables. The hotel, the Vertime, is directly opposite the port and we strolled to a small bar at the back of a fishmongers. I had fish and chips and THG had a crab roll. The fish and chips, with tartare sauce but a salad instead of mushy peas, was just right fair play. Washed it down with some fruity beer that was ok.

Bit if drama as we were sat there. There was a loud bang and I turned around to see that a black SUV of some sort had hit something, very loudly. THe front was caved in, the passenger wing mirror demolished and the front bumper had fallen off. “Fortunately” a local cop was on the scene in seconds and was able to direct the traffic down a road they hadn’t planned on using but the main drag to the port was blocked by the aforementioned UV. By the time we had finished lunch (3ish) and headed home the road was still blocked.

The walk back was hot and sweaty. It’s around 34 degrees here in Les Sables. However the place we had intended to stop at, Loches is pushing 40. Would have been unbearable. I only changed it on Tuesday when I saw the weather forecast. The Vertime was one of the few decent hotels with availability on this part of the west coast and I think we got the last room. It’s a good enough hotel with a great rooftop bar with a wonderful view over the port. Unfortunately the space below it, over the road, has been converted to a concert venue for the weekend and during our time here it is going to be very noisy. They didn’t mention this until after I’d booked. The last thing we need after a very short night’s kip last night is a couple more nights of disruption. It is what it is. From Saturday onwards we are staying at a farmhouse in 75 acres of land near a village called Cussac. The only noise will be coos. We can catch up on sleep then. We also have a great pool to ourselves. The whole fam is coming. Shud be gud.

Brunch with Joe and Lucy

Filed under: diary — Trefor Davies @ 11:31 am

Seven thirty am on a sabbath in August. I was going to write early August but I’m not so sure it is anymore. We are hurtling headlong into the middle of the month. Yeeeeeooooowwwwnnnggg. That’s a new word meaning hurtling headlong. Actually it’s important not to hurtle too much. Take it easy son. It’ll still be there. Anyway when does it stop being early in the month. There must be a definitive position on this. A decree.

Moved to the deck cos it’s such a nice morning. The robins and coal tits are very vociferous. Fox visits observed at 21:32 and 03:55. Plenty of hedgehog action. Nothing by the lake though. Plus I’m going to move the mobile cam today as it points away from the sun and never fully charges up. A pigeon just landed in front of the lake. Always looks around carefully before deciding to take a swig. V nervous birds. The lake needs topping up daily at the mo. Will need to sort out a rota for doing this whilst we are away. The vegetation is doing nicely at the western end and we can’t have all that good work being undone by letting the body of water dry up. Also I suspect the frog would be a bit upset.

This morning we are having brunch with Joe and Lucy before they head back to town. There is no rush. They didn’t get in from Rhys and Kasia’s wedding until after midnight, bearing in mind that the drinks reception started at one thirty. Bought three different lots of bacon from St Nicholas’ butchers on Burton Road to try. No additives. Unsmoked streaky and back and smoked middle. Something like that. I gave the sausages a try last night and felt the butch had overdone the sage but will see this morning how it tastes in a breakfast environment.

10:23 I hear a church bell tolling, calling the faithful to arms. Wind must be a westerly.

11:48 brunch over

19:10 v pleasant dinner over. THG’s pork chilli con carne with some left over primitivo.

Fox: 00:06, 04:14, 04:52

Filed under: diary,Fox News — Trefor Davies @ 12:29 pm

Fox: 00:06, 04:14, 04:52. Interesting hedgehog interaction 02:01 – 02:03. Not sure if there was some mating going on here or not. Either one of them was unwell or just not having any of it. Curled up. Three vids to watch.

Lovely night out at OleOle with Joe and Lucy. We sat outside. Joe dialled up an Uber for a lift home and got it for free. Something to do with being an Uber One member. Will have to investigate that one. I think I already did and concluded it wouldn’t be worthwhile but will have another look.

Off to Rhys Edwards’ wedding today. Just to the church. One of Joe’s mates we’ve known since birth. They are all starting to get married now. There will be a flush of weddings for the next few years before they move on to christenings.

Both THG and Joe have gone out running. THG to the parkrun and Joe to do 5k around uphill Lincoln. Quite a pleasant running route taking in the castle and cathedral. I’m sat on the deck, nipping into the shed periodically to check up on progress with my census transcriptions. You have to feed Claude in batches to avoid overloading it. Currently working my way through Llangeler where my 3 x great grandparents farmed a place called Pantyffynnon. Visited there with Joe last year. The ffynnon itself was filled in in recent times.

The other news is that today is effectively the start of the new football season with the first round of the Carabao Cup, the League Cup as was (still is really). The Imps are away at Derby County. We have just signed two strikers on loan, one of whom is from Spurs, so will be interesting to see how it goes.

pleasant night out with THG and the Sands

Filed under: diary,Fox News — Trefor Davies @ 4:43 pm

V pleasant night out with THG and the Sands last night. Couple of craft beers in the Monkey Puzzle (or whatever it is called) and then an amble along the pavement to the Cathedral View Indian. Although I had been there after golf it was the first time for THG. The Sands had only just been there last week but you can never have too many curries innit.

Today is a day for sorting stuff out. Tomorrow we are off to see me blood and blister Ann and husband Toby in Wiltshoire. Life is a bit of a whirlwind really.

Looks like we had a drop of rain overnight. Not enough to have an effect but better than nowt.

Left my “landline” plugged in this pm. just had a phishing call. didn’t bother answering and now it’s unplugged again for another few months.

Fox 21:35 last night.

banging tunes

Filed under: diary,Fox News — Trefor Davies @ 4:22 pm

Some banging tunes coming out of the wireless set this morning. Sunday Service from Port Sunlight United Reform Church. Hadn’t realised that the United Reform Church came from the coming together of the congregationalist and presbyterian churches. Never too late to learn. We’ve stayed in Port Sunlight a few times. Cracking pub nearby, Rose & Crown. Uncle Bill’s fave watering hole. THG has paused the service whilst we are outside. Already a lovely morning. Perfect weather really. Garden needs watering.

Pleasant bbq last night where we sat at my new garden table. Starting to earn its living, so to speak. I bunged some minted lamb kebabs from Pepperdyne’s on the grill and nipped in to the shed to do something. Almost left it too long but all worked out ok in the end. Kebabs were v good fair play. Not so sure about the sausages. Not as good as Fosters though I did buy the prepacked ones which seem to have lots of additives. Will try out the bacon this morning.

Dunno what lies in store today really. During the day anyway. We are off out for a curry with the Sands ce soir.

Breakfasted, showered and now sipping tea on the deck. A gull of some brand or other circles overhead. I hear voices through the hedge from next door. Both sides. The others will be out of the house by ten thirty, THG to church and H&G to visit Lois and Joe around the corner. I’m going to see if I can make some progress on the compost bins. Need to get the circular saw out.

I’ve finished transcribing the 1871 census for Llanfihangel ar Arth and now doing Llangeler.

Fox 00:21. Met someone yestray at hte Dowsws who leaves food out for the fox!

Sat on the deck last night enjoying the evening

Filed under: diary,Fox News — Trefor Davies @ 8:43 am

Sat on the deck last night enjoying the evening with Adie and Zara. I had just mentioned that we had a hedgehog when lo and behold it trotted across the lawn in front of us and started rooting around the back of the raised beds. Couldn’t have timed it better. Then Z spotted the frog on the path, maybe 3 yards from the lake. This is quite thrilling. One of the reasons for having the lake was to attract frogs which like to eat slugs and snails. Ditto the hedgehog. It feels very much as if we have had fewer of them this year.

Last night was one of the few evenings we have stayed outside long enough to benefit from having the lights on around the barbecue area and also outside the shed. Makes the place v atmospheric. The downside, however, is that it means the nights are already beginning to draw in.

Now back on the deck before breakfast. Might as well take advantage of this weather while we can. My new sunglasses have been a result. Feels as if they are even better than my normal specs. I’ll still use the old ones for the pool. The lenses, which were so worn, kept falling out but I’ve superglued them in. The nuclear option but it doesn’t really matter.

Today is going to be another day of relaxation. I’m not in a rush to have breakfast. I still feel full from last night’s bbq. A few leftover sausages to eat up. No sign of Hannah and George yet. No rush innit. A few birds tweeting away, chirping. Unfortunately my phone is in the kitchen charging so I can’t tell you what make bird we are talking about. Several.

Looks as if we might have had some rain overnight. Not enough to get excited about. Quite a bit of cloud up there. More cloud than blue sky but it isn’t particularly solid, if you know what I mean. Amazing things innit, clouds 🙂
