Heckington

Filed under: diary — Trefor Davies @ 7:30 am

All is quiet on the playing fields of Heckington. All that is except for the constant noise of the traffic on the A17. Better, I guess, that it is now a bypass instead of all those cars clogging up the main street as would have been the case before it was built.

Slept like a log meself until THG alerted me to the fact that it was six forty five. The effect of beer, Chapeldown sparkling wine, primitivo, gin and tonic and rum and coke. Simon did not on this occasion make it as far as the gin and the rum but staggered off early to the comfort of the large double bed in his motorhome. I bought the Chapeldown as it was on offer at Waitrose but tbh it wasn’t dry enough for my taste.

We discovered, as it got dark last night, that our leisure battery had not charged up. Always something innit. Fortunately we brought the portable LED camping light as a backup. Didn’t find that until this morning but that’s ok. Couple of dog walkers making their way around the edge of the field. Good job I already availed myself of the hedge.

Today we are going to the Heckington Show. We went for the first time last year and really enjoyed it so we are back. It chucked it down last year but today’s weather is set to be gorgeous. Last year the evening’s entertainment was a Robbie Williams tribute act and this year they’ve gone for Elton. Not the lad himself obvs. I quite like Elton. When we went to see him at the Showground I was amazed at how many of his songs I knew.

None of our crowd have stirred. We weren’t the first to bed but some of the hard core funboys will have been a lot later than us. Most of them have onboard facilities so will not need to leave their vans. We do have a portaloo but the hedge is a much easier option. The caravanners behind us have already gone to the showerblock but otherwise there is no movement. Pieman just strolled by in search of his camping chair.

I will in due course mosey over to the shower block meself. It isn’t a shower block per se. Just the changing room for the playing football pitch and as I recall only has two showers and one toilet cubicle but that’s fine as long as there isn’t a big queue.
